Types of Scholarships
Examples of what might be part of a scholarship application:
- academics
- athletics
- fine arts
- school and/or community involvement
- leadership
- student government
- academic competitions
- volunteer activities
Entrance scholarships are given to students by the university/college they have applied to. Info about entrance scholarships for prospective first-year students is available on the website of each university/college. Many entrance scholarships are automatic (based on grades) but there are some that have a separate application the student needs to complete. These awards are presented to students who excel in academics, or other areas such as athletics, fine arts, community involvement or leadership.
Nominated Awards
Some scholarships and awards are "nominated," which means the student is nominated or sponsored by the school for the award. Some of these awards only allow nominated students to apply, where other awards give priority to nominated students.
Ms. Fernandes will be sending out info to her e-mail list on nominated scholarships that come up throughout the year. Students are invited to submit a Nominated Scholarship profile starting October 1st so they can be considered throughout the year. These profiles are also used in the school scholarship process at the end of the year.
Open Awards
These awards are open to all students, as long as they meet the criteria. They could be from unions, private and public organizations, etc. You can look into places of employment, unions and organizations to which your parents and grandparents belong. Ms. Fernandes will send out information on any of these scholarships that she is aware of throughout the year.
Students can also search online for these awards. Below are some scholarship search websites for Grade 12's.
